Tom Cruise seems to have outdone himself at the Chinese box office over the past week, with his latest film Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol taking over at the top of the box office charts.
American studio Paramount has announced the film collected an estimated 157 million yuan (19 million euros) on its first weekend of release, outstripping by five times the opening efforts of the last film in the franchise, 2006's Mission: Impossible III.
China has just come out of the Lunar New Year holiday period -- traditionally a boom time for cinemas -- and the latest MI film has been going head-to-head with Robert Downey, Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which has now picked up and estimated 145 million yuan (17.4 million euros) since its release on January 15.
It's yet another indication of the current power of the Chinese box office, reaffirmed this week by the Shanghai-based industry watcher Artisan Gateway, which has confirmed reports that around 13 billion yuan (1.6 billion euros) in tickets were sold across the nation in 2011, a rise of 29 percent year on year.

Everybody is talking about Abhishek and me: Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor
He movie 'Players' has just hit the screens. When we caught up with actress Sonam Kapoor, she said that everyone was commenting on Abhishek Bachchan and her chemistry. Sonam said, "Everybody has been telling me how good we look together, especially in our songs. I've always maintained that Abhishek is my favourite co-star. We did Delhi 6 together. In that film we had a pigeon, too. In Players, there's a pigeon. I wonder what connection Abhishek and I have with pigeons."
'Players' was promoted alongside Mission Impossible-4 when Tom Cruise visited India too! "It was a lovely experience," shared Sonam, who went on to add, "My dad's a rockstar" when asked about what she felt about Anil Kapoor's performance in the international venture.
So when do we see her share screen space with dad? "It's going to be a while. First, there's no script, and second, I'm sure I'll suffer from weak knees when acting with him."

200 Indian fans hired at Rs 300 to welcome Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise

Cheering squad paid to greet the hollywood star at airport's vip exit. Some of them did not even know who the actor was, 'but 300 for an hour is easy money'.

By the time Tom Cruise landed in Mumbai on Saturday evening, a couple of 100 eager fans had managed to line the pavement across the airport's VIP exit, even though the time of his arrival had not been made public. As the Hollywood star emerged from the gate, in a blue shirt and aviator sunglasses, the air was buzzing with screeches and elated, in coherent howls. There was bannerwaving, and much cheering and chanting. Cruise, who's been travelling around the world to promote his new film, "Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol", is used to such a reception wherever he goes. This time, however, there was an Indian twist to the tale.
The crowd gathered at the airport had been paid to be there by the organizers of his trip, with the price ranging from 200 to 400, depending on how 'experienced' each member of the cheering squad was.
A few of the 'fans' were not even sure who they were welcoming, despite chart-paper placards reading, "we love Tom Cruise", "Tom - chak de India", and "Tom Cruises". Three girls from Mankhurd, among the most vocal members of the crowd, for example, did not exactly know what Tom Cruise did. "We're not certain," one of them told us, "but 300 for an hour outside the airport is not bad."

More enquiries revealed that the trip's organizers had hired an agency that specialized in arranging for crowds for celebrity events. An official from that agency, who was present at the airport, said that each person was paid an average of 300 to be a part of the crowd and cheer for Tom for 15 mins. "We asked them to reach here by 4 pm as we were told that he would arrive at 5:15," the official told this newspaper on condition of anonymity.
